AmeriCorps Week

AmeriCorps Week begins this Saturday! How are you participating? In Maine, there’s many options. Search for AmeriCorps events in your area through AmeriCorps Week Events.

In Portland, Alums are participating in several events. We’ve created a page outlining the details. Please check out how you can participate and RSVP on AmeriCorps Week Events. Share the events with your friends on facebook and twitter.

Don’t forget to participate in the AmeriCorps Works photo project!

AmeriCorps Works Photo Project

Calling all Maine AmeriCorps Alums! We need your help to show the impact of AmeriCorps programs in Maine communities and your life.

To participate, please download and print the above image. Then take a picture of you showing how “AmeriCorps Works” for you. Show us something you completed in your term of service, where you work now, or any other way that AmeriCorps changed your life or community.

Email the photos to kate.mccarty@americorpsalums.org. The pictures will be displayed online during AmeriCorps Week  (March 10-18th) and will show how AmeriCorps works and gets things done!

“AmeriCorps Works!”

As part of National AmeriCorps Week, AmeriCorps Alums is launching the “AmeriCorps Works” photo project!

In “AmeriCorps Works,” photographer Greta Rybus showcases the impact of national service program AmeriCorps in Maine. AmeriCorps Alumni are featured showing how AmeriCorps has worked for them, from uniting couples to advancing careers to finding a home in the state of Maine. Through the project, AmeriCorps Alums hopes to promote national service while highlighting the specific effects in Maine communities.

The show will be displayed at Blue in the month of March. Please join us at 650 Congress Street on Friday, March 2nd at 5:30pm for the show’s opening during the First Friday Art Walk.

If you would like to participate in the project remotely, please email kate.mccarty@americorpsalums.org for details. We would love to see the power of national service in Maine represented. Thanks!

AmeriCorps Week in Maine

Save the date! AmeriCorps Week is March 10-18th, 2012, and as always, we have a lot of events planned in Maine. We received a grant for an “AmeriCorps Works” photo project from National AmeriCorps Alums and the Points of Light Institute. Thank you to our grantors for making this year’s AmeriCorps Week possible.

The theme “AmeriCorps Works” is going to be used to highlight Alums as community leaders around the state. If you would like to participate in the photo project, email kate.mccarty@americorpsalums.org for more information.

Otherwise, stay tuned to this site, as well as our social media (facebook, twitter), to see how you can participate in AmeriCorps Week and show how AmeriCorps works!

December Meeting, Thurs. 12/8, 6pm

Update:  Thanks to those that came out for our meeting last Thursday, 12/8!  Here’s the meeting notes:

Here’s the notes from our meeting last Thursday!

We discussed the MLK Day January 16, 2012 project and are looking to piggy-back with the CRC’s theme of childhood wellness, anti-obesity, and physical activity. At the urging Points of Light Institute, we’ll reach out to our local Food Corps volunteers and see if we can partner with them for a service project.

Kate M. will renew the Community TV Network membership, and if anyone relishes being in front of the camera, let me know, since they will run promos for our programs any time. I’ve done it through my work and it’s very non-threatening (assuming you don’t automatically turn beet red in the vicinity of a video camera).

We discussed having a monthly networking meeting at Dimillo’s (free happy hour buffet!) on the 3rd Wednesday of every month, which next month is January 21st. I’ll let you know if that comes through.

That’s what you missed if you weren’t there! Stay tuned for more MLK Day project info.

Please join us for our December Maine AmeriCorps Alums meeting!  Currently serving AmeriCorps members and Alums are welcome.  We’ll meet upstairs at Brian Boru (57 Center Street, Portland) at 6pm.

The agenda includes:

  • MLK Day 2012 Service Project
  • 2011 Holiday Project
  • CTN Membership Renewal
  • Regular meeting date for 2012
  • New Alum engagement

Feel free to bring your own agenda items!  Email kate@americorpsalums.org for more information.
